Your Breathing Science Facilitators

The Breathing Science Course is a collaborative project by Shane & Angie Saunders (Founders of Breathe Me, the O2 Collective & The Online Breathing Academy) and Dr. Peter Litchfield, of the Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences.

Shane and Angie are actively studying with Dr. Litchfield and his partner Sandra Reimer,  currently studying to be Certified Breathing Behavioral Analysts with the Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences.

Together their mission is to help Personal Trainers, Life Coaches and Health Practitioners to facilitate their work helping clients to achieve their physical and mental health goals by utilizing the art of breathing based on physiological and behavioral sciences.

Peter M. Litchfield, Ph.D.

President of the Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences, CEO of Better Physiology Ltd. (breathing technology), and Board of Directors and Editor, Breathing Science (journal)

Peter earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Portland in 1972.  He served as Assistant Professor of Psychology 1970-1974, was tenured in 1974, and served as Associate Professor of Psychology 1974-1981 at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. He founded and directed: Proseminar Institute in San Francisco, 1976-1981; the Applied Psychophysiology Institute in San Francisco CA and Bainbridge Island WA, 1981-1997; Behavioral Physiology Institutes (a graduate school in behavioral medicine) in Bainbridge Island WA, 1997-1999; and President of the Graduate School of Behavioral Health Sciences in Cheyenne WY (MS program in Applied Breathing Sciences), 2013-2020.

His areas of expertise include: behavioral medicine, behavioral physiology, applied psychophysiology, research design, behavioral pharmacology, placebo effects, biological learning and motivation, and physiological monitoring technology.  Respiratory psychophysiology and breathing behavior analysis have been his exclusive focus since 2000.

Peter currently serves as CEO of Better Physiology, Ltd., 2000 - present (manufacturer of breathing instrumentation); President of the Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences, 2020 - present; and Member of the Board of Directors and an Editor for Breathing Science, Inc. (a nonprofit organization that publishes Breathing Science, a peer-reviewed digital journal),   He has lectured for more than 40 years in person and by webinar on behavioral physiology, respiratory psychophysiology, and self-regulation science throughout North America and in Asia, Australia, Europe, and Latin America to diverse audiences, ranging from medical schools to corporate groups.

Shane Saunders

Former Special Forces Trainer, Co-Founder of Breathe Me, Award Winning Author, Professional Coach, Professional Speaker, and Co-Host of The Breathing Edge Podcast

Shane served for 13 years in the Australian Defense Force where he trained military divers, tactical assault experts, and top military performers in mind-body self-regulation science while also assisting them (and himself) to successfully complete the SAS selection course.

Shane's wife, Angie left the USA to join forces in together in Australia, not only in marriage, but in their professional work where together they built a business, Breathe Me, that helps people experience and implement multi-disciplinary techniques for improving health and performance.

Angie Saunders

Former Entertainer and Production Coordinator, Co-Founder of Breathe Me, Award Winning Author, Professional Coach, Professional Speaker, and Co-Host of The Breathing Edge Podcast

Angie is from a high-powered background in the entertainment industry in Hollywood where she worked both in front of the camera (singing, dancing, acting and stunts) and behind the scenes in production, coordinating films where personal high performance was central to her profession.

Together with Shane, they share a common interest in the art (practice) and science (research) of mind-body psychology and the development of optimal self-regulation during performance under pressure led them to weaving together an integrated collection of high-performance learning techniques for reducing stress, working in demanding environments, improving sleep, and stabilizing personal energy. These techniques include the union of ancient wisdom of the breath with breathing science to lower reactivity, improve focus, and bring the mind and body into balance.

More On Breathing & The Science Of Wellness

Respiration is reflexive. If and when we allow it, it takes care of itself.  Unfortunately though, given the nature of our hectic everyday lives, many of us get in its way, often resulting in unpleasant symptoms and deficits.  To make things worse, these outcomes are rarely identified as breathing dysfunctions, and instead often misdiagnosed and misinterpreted as attributed by unrelated causes.

How we breathe changes our internal environment from second to second, breath to breath. Specifically, the pH of extracellular body fluids such as blood plasma.  Breathing regulates acid-base balance which plays a critical role in maintaining and achieving good health and optimal performance.

For example, if someone's blood pH is too high as a result of over breathing (i.e., losing too much carbon dioxide), it will compromise blood flow to the brain, heart, and other tissues, thus reducing oxygen and glucose availability to these tissues.  The resulting mental changes include effects on memory, cognition, emotion, attention, and personality.

In this course, we will guide you through a basic understanding of breathing science, its physiology and psychology, and introduce you to developing an awareness of your breathing habits, how they are affecting you (and thus your clients), and how you can make changes to them for optimizing respiration and achieving optimal breathing self-regulation.
